  • School district officials in Detroit announced a plan to close 45 of their 172 buildings at the end of this year, The New York Times reports. The district also announced a plan this week to improve the district’s academic performance.
  • A global credit-rating agency’s negative outlook of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s ability to repay certain bonds is indicative of the district’s overall financial status, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. CEO Eugene Sanders told the paper he plans to fill the hole in the district’s budget with the savings from measures like school closures and non-union staff furloughs, but he will have to turn to the unions to fill part of the gap.
